Timedance’s first drop of the year also sees label boss Batu releasing on his own imprint for the first time since 2017. False Reeds is a fabulous re-entry from a producer who’s fast becoming a leader in his field. The title track that kicks off ‘False Reeds’ is a classic example of the soundsystem techno style that Batu has helped pioneer. Over helter-skelter drums a series of dainty samples and synths flit around the mix, with the overall effect being pitched somewhere between Batu’s pals Ploy and Peverelist. There is also the ghost of a Chicago house influence to the ‘False Reeds’ bassline, a pleasing addition and something we’ve not heard in Batu’s sound before. Elsewhere on False Reeds ‘Statin (Dub)’ is Metrist-esque slo-mo strangeness and ‘Shiratani’ channels Walton’s hood-up Eski-techno style.
